Music in the Park
report by Jim Walker
When the charity show,‘Music in the Park’,
was staged at Englefield near Theale last year it was on the wettest
weekend for goodness knows how long and much of Berkshire was flooded.
Still the show went on.
This year the gods were kind and the sun shone for most of the day.
The arena was ringed with gazebos and filled with an audience of all
ages. The receipts are still being counted, but the charity chosen
as the main beneficiary, The Alexander Devine Children’s Cancer
Trust, should receive a tidy sum.
Saturday saw the sun shine brilliantly for most of the day and a crowd
of about 450 spectators sat down and enjoyed their picnic before being
entertained by the South Berks Concert Band playing a selection of
light classical music all of which was melodic and recognisable and
brought great appreciation from the crowd.
To start the evening’s entertainment the children of Englefield
School sang a selection of songs.
The event was organised by the Rotary Club of Reading Abbey who are
grateful to the Benyon family for making the beautiful setting of
Englefield Park available for the event. There can be fewer splendid
sites for such an occasion, with the wide acres of the Park encompassing
the view of Englefield House on one side and the lake on the other
– and even a herd of deer in the background.
